DESCRIPTION

Chronic UVA exposure to the skin generates reactive oxygen species (ROS). This is the first step of the process that leads to the degradation of collagen and elastic fibers in the dermis and wrinkles appearance (photoaging). ROS triggers intracellular signal transcription pathways which up-regulates metalloproteases (MMPs) in the dermis. MMPs, a family matrix degrading enzymes associated with various destructive processes, degrade collagen and elastin resulting in the formation of wrinkles over time.

Many phytochemicals possess skin photoprotective effects able to prevent inflammation, oxidative stress and DNA damage.
